We do love our Winter escapes North... We love the warmer weather, the relaxing days, and most of all, getting to spend lots of time with the Walshs...
Getting here has been a growing challenge though, especially since Lucy turned 2 and became a full fare airline passenger. Until then, we could justify the cost of 2 and then 3 passengers vs the looooong drive... But 4 full fares is a little extravagant when compared with the cost of one nights accommodation so the road it was for this trip!
Matt's idea, to break up the trip, was to call in to the Dubbo Zoo (formally known as the Taronga Western Plains Zoo) on the way up so our voyage up was planned accordingly.
Friday afternoon, Matt finished work early and we set off for our first destination, Kez, Mike and the kids 3 hrs away in Cootamundra.
James and Lucy had seen Ella, Jack and Lily the Sunday before so were busting their little chops to get to their house for a play. They adore their big cousins!!! We had a great night there, catching up with family who we don't see nearly as often as we should. And James and Lucy had 'sleepovers' in Jack and Lily's rooms respectively which was icing on the cake for them.
Up bright and early Saturday morning for the 4 hour drive to Dubbo. We've worked out a rhythm that seems to work for our kids of stints of 2hrs driving followed by a half hour break. If we stick to this, the drive has been tolerable... We alternate between car trays/drawing/books and then bring out the DVD player for the next stint. The morning drive to Dubbo wasn't that hard though with the kids being super excited about seeing elephants and tigers!
The zoo was amazing, it really felt like the animals were roaming free with electric fences being concealed behind dirt mounds at the edge of their massive enclosures. We witnessed some great moments, a hippo going swimming, monkeys swinging from island to island, and an elephant doing tricks and waving at us. I'll try and get the videos edited and uploaded cos they're great! I'll have more so blog by the end of the trip but I'll finish this blog with a few images from the zoo and get back to holidaying!
